Not Only on Chips

Vinegar has myriads of uses in the kitchen but it can also do miracles in the garden. Here are 8 amazing vinegar uses in the garden:

1. CLEAN CLAY POTS
If you do not like the distressed look that happens to clay pots, soak them in a 25 percent vinegar/water solution for 20 -30 minutes then scrub them clean with soapy water. As good as new.

2. REMOVE WEEDS
On walls, paths and lawns, simply spray them with pure white vinegar (only on the weeds).

3. GET RID OF ANTS
Mix equal amounts of water and vinegar (white or apple cider variety) and spray the solution on the anthills in the garden. In the house, look out for the ants entry paths, counter tops, cupboards and windows and wipe down  with the vinegar solution. The strong scent of the vinegar will deter the ants.

4. EXTEND THE LIFE OF CUT FLOWERS
Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar and a teaspoon of sugar per litre of water.

5. MAKE ACID LOVING PLANTS HAPPY
Acid loving plants like gardenias, azaleas and rhododendrons can be given a quick acid boost  with vinegar. A cup of white vinegar to a gallon of water will give them a temporary boost when watered with this.

6. CLEAN RUST FROM GARDEN TOOLS
Vinegar can be used to make garden tools rust free. Just spray or soak the tools in undiluted
vinegar, leave for a few minutes and then rinse, clean and dry tools. Bird baths and bird houses can also be cleaned with vinegar.

7. SAVE PLANTS FROM FUNGUS
Plants suffering from fungus and mould can be protected using this vinegar fungicide recipe. Add 2 teaspoons of vinegar to brewed chamomile tea and spray this on affected plants. It is safe and organic.

8. DETER FRUIT FLIES
Make a bait using vinegar to save fruit crops from fruit flies. Mix together a cup of water, half a cup of apple cider  vinegar, 1/4 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of molasses. Put this solution in an empty container or tin can and hang it on affected tree. This will attract and trap them. A similar solution can be used on house flies and is healthy for the environment.

If you know of anymore, do share with us next month.
