Pride

1/8/2017

I am glad that young people nowadays rarely use platitudes (dull or boring statements).

People used to say “It never rains but it pours” Not true! Yesterday it drizzled for 10 minutes and then the rain stopped! Another untrue one is “birds of a feather flock together”. The feathered species might, but not often people. I’m proud to have many excellent friends, but even my best friends and myself disagree on many matters.

However, the two silliest sayings in my opinion are "pride comes before a fall” and “too proud for his own good”. I’m really proud of many things and people and I hope that you are too!

The person that I am most proud of is my late husband. Even fighting devastating cancer, Ron never grumbled. He was always more concerned about me than about himself. What courage! My family fill me with pride not just because of their achievements but because they are really good people.

I’m proud of St John Baptist Church and especially of being part of our wonderful choir. My heart is in France, but I am immensely proud of Great Britain and our Royal Family. Most of my French friends really envy us the latter. One of my friends worked in the Air France offices on the Champs Elysées. They were once given some time off in order to stand outside and wave to our Queen as she passed them. They were all so thrilled, and I have often heard about it.

No country does pageantry as well as ours. I’ve just watched the Trooping of the Colour on television. Everything, as always, was immaculate. Even the horses behaved fantastically! So much work goes on behind the scenes that deserves praise. Did you notice how beautiful St James Park looked? The gardeners had planted 2000 red geraniums which were all in full bloom at the right time. What skill! The roads are closed beforehand and all the traffic lights and roundabouts are removed. Nothing is left to spoil the view of the 208 Union Jack flags topped with crowns that frame Buckingham Palace. Electric sweepers work all through the previous night to clean the roads. It used to be swept manually!

There are so many other things of which I am proud. I expect that you all have different lists. It’s good to recognise how lucky we are to have so much in which we can take pride. I hope that you agree. Be proud of yourself too!
