Small Things

Do you believe the saying that the best things come in small packages? I suppose a beautiful diamond ring would only need a small box! However I’m thinking of a person, not an object.

When we needed a new assistant at Hotwell’s Post Office, we had about ten applicants. The person whom we chose was very tiny. The top of her head came up to my waist. Ron made her a wooden box to stand on so that she could reach the counter! She couldn’t help us fill the card stands, or do the dusting, but we never regretted our decision to employ her. She was popular with our customers, devoted to us and very honest.

Before she worked for us, she had always been in show business. The audiences thought that the leader of the troupe of dancers was aged about 6, whereas she was the same as the others. Her best friend was one of Roger Moore’s ex-wives and she was also a friend of Barbara Windsor. ”Babe” as everyone called her, eventually lived in a nursing home. When I visited her she loved to talk about her time at our Post Office. When Barbara Windsor had the lead in the Christmas pantomime, Babe was taken in a taxi to see her. They had their photo together and it was hung in the entrance hall of the nursing home. Babe was very proud of it. She was definitely a delightful person in a small package.

I have room for a different example. When we lived in the Vendée region of France we sometimes bought our carrots at Chantonnay, a small town famed for them. Imagine my surprise when I found packets of tiny carrots in the Co-op marked Chantenay. Where are they grown? Norfolk!

I suppose that is why they had to change the spelling. Champagne can only be labelled thus if it is made in the Reims region of France. Incidentally the hotel restaurants there use it in the cooking rather than wine or beer.

Back to the carrots! Cooked in butter and a little honey, they are more delicious than the huge ones.

Small acts of kindness often outweigh large gestures. St. Thérèse, one of my favourite saints said “We can’t all do great things but we can do little things with great love.”

Enjoy the small things in life.
