My gooseberry crop should be picked early this month. I have always found that my soft fruits are harvested well before the Flower Show, except of course for the Autumn Raspberries.
Flower Show, yes that is on the 19th July and at the time of writing my fuchsia, for the Horticultural Society competition, is coming on well. A timely reminder to members who took a “plug” in March to bring their plant along to the show.
Again, at the time of writing, I am surprised by the growth of my tomato plants, they are needing a lot of attention and watering. Also a weekly feed, of liquid potash is required to improve the flavour and I believe to make the skins softer.
This month and the next, it is important to water the camellias and rhododendrons well, to ensure good flowering next spring.
As we move through the month of maturing vegetable crops, picking regularly is essential to avoid old and stringy results.
Keep an eye open for slugs and snails, especially if the weather is damp.
Tip of the month, see you at the Flower Show!
