The winter flowering pansies are in full bloom, so must be dead headed to keep the new buds coming. But what am I going to be doing in February? I notice that all the rain we have had has compacted the soil, so it will be a light raking to pick up the debris of the winter and then carefully fork over the top to aerate the soil.
They say that February can be colder than January, so I will need to keep an eye on the greenhouse, not that there is much in it.
I have noted already that the evenings are beginning to draw out so towards the end of February it could be time for a small sowing of salad leaves to go on the kitchen window sill. Also maybe a small sowing of lettuce and tomato to get an early crop.
February is the last month to prune back shrubs and trees. I have already identified a couple that will need treatment.
So it’s a month for appraisal and to prioritise the work, but see the tip of the month!
Tip of the month: Be careful not to get too energetic!
