But with the wet and mild weather we have had, the lawn will need early attention. As I write some people have already given their lawns the first cut. Maybe I will have joined them before March is out! If the ground is wet we should avoid too much walking on the grass. Once conditions are good then we can get going with the lawn mower, blades high to start with and lower as the season progresses. Then I shall give the lawn a Spring feed and if necessary treat it with a weed and moss killer.
Hopefully the early sowing of lettuce, tomato and cucumber will have germinated and time to pot on followed by some succession sowing. Also this month it will be time to sow some larger seeds like marrow and beans. Although for my small vegetable area I might be tempted to buy a few young plants like broad beans and runner beans from a Garden Centre.
Slugs, snails and weeds will start to be a problem, so I shall have to keep an eye open for the first signs and treat accordingly. For the weeds I shall try to treat with a sharp hoe at the seedling stage.
This year my winter pansies have been very good so it will be difficult to decide when to take them out and plant up the patio troughs with geraniums for the summer.
After dead heading the daffodils and tulips, I like to let the leaves die down before removing, which might not be until the end of the month. Then feed with bone meal to encourage the flower for next year.
Tip of the month: Beware of late frosts.
