Why is there a tarmac path around the common behind the school and church? The path is some way into the common and leads nowhere.
100 years ago this was a quarry. There were also springs which were used for the laundry. There was a wall on the steep side nearest to the church wall to prevent people falling in. When quarrying stopped it was used as a rubbish tip. In time it was grassed over but grass did not grow where the wall was so the top of the wall was covered in tarmac.
